The Atlanta Dream had plenty to celebrate in their 83-65 road win over the New York Liberty on Wednesday. But one moment involving Dream star Angel Reese drawing a foul on the Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu quickly became the main talking point on social media.
Once the play began circulating, many across the WNBA world were unhappy with the flagrant foul call against Ionescu.

Atlanta entered Wednesday’s matchup looking to finish its two-game set against New York on a high note, while the Liberty were without Breanna Stewart (knee).
The Dream had built a 39-26 lead by the time the controversial play happened. With just 5.6 seconds left before halftime, Reese drew an offensive foul on Ionescu.
The Liberty guard’s arm hit Reese in the face during the play, and the officials went to the replay to take another look. After the review, the foul was upgraded to a Flagrant 1.
Reese had already gone back to the locker room, but she returned to the floor to shoot the two free throws. She made both before leaving the court again. She was not on the bench when the second half started but returned with 6:19 left in the third quarter.
The Dream outscored the Liberty 23-7 in a dominant second quarter. However, the call quickly became a hot topic among WNBA fans, with several arguing that Reese initiated most of the contact.
“Angel Reese with a CRAZY flop. Refs gave Sabrina a FLAGRANT for this,” BrickCenter scoffed.
One fan took aim at the officiating, arguing, “Welcome to WNBA officiating where you can run your face into the ballhandler’s arm while you are reaching in and it’s a flagrant on them.”
“Reese flopped,” an X user bluntly claimed.

The criticism kept coming as fans questioned the decision to upgrade the foul.
“One of the worst calls! This league is becoming a joke,”a fan declared.
“You know that [expletive] hurt lmao this is pathetic,” another wrote.
“God-awful call,” another fan commented.
One Liberty supporter was especially unhappy with the decision involving Ionescu.
“So Sabrina Ionescu gets a flagrant foul called on her when she got fouled first? At the end of the day, this game doesn’t mean anything to us, but WNBA refs are absolutely the worst,” the fan wrote.
Despite the controversy, the foul did not change the outcome. Atlanta pulled away for its fifth straight win and secured the No. 4 seed, while New York dropped both of its final games against the Dream.

Reese finished with 6 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals while shooting 2-for-7 from the field. She also went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, with both makes coming after the flagrant foul.
After taking care of business on the road, the Dream finished the 2026 regular season with a 30-14 record. They have also secured home-court advantage and will now wait until Thursday to find out whether they will face the Indiana Fever or Washington Mystics in the first round of the playoffs.
