Residents and visitors in Northern Michigan are one step closer to enjoying a fully connected trail between Boyne City and Charlevoix.
Organizers have reached a $50,000 fundraising goal to fund initial design engineering for the final phase of the Boyne City to Charlevoix Trail, according to a community announcement.
The Boyne City to Charlevoix Trail has been under active development since about 2010. It is designed to link the two Charlevoix County cities.Design work to begin on final 6 miles of trail
Wade Trim Inc., a Detroit-based civil engineering firm, has been contracted by the Charlevoix County Trail Team to determine the best route for the remaining six miles of trail between Horton Bay and the outskirts of Charlevoix.
The Top of Michigan Trails Council is serving as a fiduciary, organizational and fundraising partner for the project. The nonprofit has supported the trail since it began more than 25 years ago.

"We achieved our fundraising goal sooner than we expected which confirmed the strength of the desire in our community to finish the trail," Steve Van Dam, of the Charlevoix County Trail Team, said in the announcement. "We will get the conceptual design work started as soon as possible and simultaneously establish our goals for the next steps needed to keep this moving. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to pushing this project forward."
Fundraising boost from Michigan Mountain Mayhem
Fundraising efforts received a boost from the Michigan Mountain Mayhem Spring Classic, which donated more than $1,500, according to the announcement. The annual road cycling event is held in Boyne City in mid-June and features 50K, 100K, 160K and 200K routes through hilly terrain with up to 10,000 feet of climbing.
Donations also came from a variety of local and regional individuals and organizations, according to the announcement.
