Her roles in Tim Burton's 1988 film* Beetlejuice* as Delia Deetz and Chris Columbus' 1990 hit *Home Alone* as Kate McCallister catapulted her to the A-list. She reprised her role as Kate, the beleaguered mother of Kevin (Macaulay Culkin), in the 1992 sequel *Home Alone 2: Lost in New York*. In 2024, she returned as Delia, the stepmother of Winona Ryder's Lydia, in the long-awaited sequel *Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice*.

Other major roles for O'Hara in the '90s included Burton's 1993's *The* *Nightmare Before Christmas* — in which she voiced Sally, the ragdoll psychic who longs for Jack's affection — and 1994's *Wyatt Earp*. "I like voicing characters for films and television. It doesn't compare to acting on camera. It's just a different art form and/or skill. You're usually alone in the booth, though it's more fun working with another actor, and all focus is on your voice," O'Hara told Live for Films in 2018. "It's challenging but fun. Recording 'Sally's Song' was intimidating -- that song is beautiful and difficult to sing."
