Tim Richards went TikTok viral for his hilarious perfume reviews during his 11-year-old daughter's birthday party in Ulta Beauty

"Not a fan," he said of one scent

Richards tells PEOPLE that he loves learning about beauty from his daughter

Tim Richards is the ultimate girl dad.

While his 11-year-old daughter Izzy was enjoying her birthday party in Ulta Beauty, Richards, 50, decided to take a stroll around the store. He had no idea that an off-the-cuff video during his excursion would result in a whopping 5 million TikTok views.

"My daughter is having a birthday party at Ulta. I have nowhere to go," the Mentor, Ohio, resident tells the camera in the clip posted on April 2. "So you know what I'm doing? Smelling perfumes."

Richards then picks up Sabrina Carpenter's Sweet Tooth Lemon Pie perfume and gives his brutally honest review: "Not a fan."

He moves on to the Bridgerton Dearest Revel Vanilla fragrance — reading the product name out with an exaggerated British accent in reference to the popular Netflix series —and concludes, "This is good."

The video has amassed millions of views and thousands of comments, many of which are praising Richards for embracing his daughter's interest in beauty.

"I think you are secretly having fun 😂," one commenter wrote.

"I love an awesome girl dad 🥰," said another.

Others requested more perfume reviews from him.

Richards says he was surprised by the response to his video.

"I've posted only three times to TikTok, and never expected this to happen," he tells PEOPLE, adding, "The best part of this was the really nice people and comments I've received."

Izzy was also shocked by her dad's viral moment.

"She follows me on TikTok, and I follow her. She could not believe that it went viral," Richards recalls. "I believe the phrase was, 'Dad, you could've tagged me.'"

Richards says that his daughter became interested in beauty about three years ago and that they take trips to Ulta "often."

"She just has such a passion for learning, brand names, which products do what and why," he tells PEOPLE. "And as a parent, I love learning from her because she enjoys it so much."

During her party, Izzy and her friends received bags of makeup products and learned how to apply them. "They had a really good time," Richards says.

He explains that he frequently checked in on the group, but decided to wander around because space was limited inside the party. "I've always loved the scent of perfume and cologne, so I usually find myself wandering in that direction," he says.

Clearly, his passion for fragrance resonated with viewers. "It was amazing to watch the numbers just skyrocket," he says of his viral moment. "You feel like you've hit on something people DO care about."
