EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami Just Had a Major Oscars First

KPop Demon Hunters’ EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami made their Oscar debut in style.

They coordinated in black and gold looks ahead of their performance at the ceremony.

The hit movie is up for two awards tonight: Best Original Song (“Golden”) and Best Animated Feature.

EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami are ending their awards season of firsts with one final milestone: their first-ever Academy Awards. The singing voices of KPop Demon Hunters’ HUNTR/X coordinated in glamorous black and gold looks, paying a cheeky (and chic) homage to their song “Golden.”

EJAE (who plays Rumi) wore a sparkling strapless Dior gown, while Nuna (Mira) opted for a custom Thom Browne ballgown, and Ami (Zoey) selected a shimmering minidress paired with a long embroidered shrug.

KPop Demon Hunters has two nominations tonight: Best Original Song for “Golden” (which EJAE co-wrote and the three performed) and Best Animated Feature. The three stars will also perform “Golden” during the ceremony.

In February, EJAE spoke on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast about how Ami and Nuna were tapped for the project.

EJAE was already part of the songwriting team—and knew they were perfect the moment she met them. “I’m huge fans of their music, so I was like, ‘Why not?’” she recalled. “And when I saw them I was like, ‘Yes, this makes so much sense.’ And it was so hilarious because Audrey—I met her when she was, like, 14, when I was also a baby in songwriting, around the time I wrote [Red Velvet’s] ‘Psycho,’ like right before it. Audrey actually knew Andrew [Choi, the singing voice of Jinu and a songwriter] too—Andrew’s just like, the connector, and he brought her in, and she was interested in songwriting. And she was like a little girl, so innocent with her white T-shirt and pink backpack, and she was like, ‘Hi!’ And then you’re like, ‘Let’s write a gospel song.’ We literally wrote a gospel song together. I still have it. Someday I’ll show it. But yeah, an incredible singer. And then fast-forward to when I met her at the studio, and she’s like this cool girl, she grew up, she’s tall, cool baggy jeans, so stylish, and she was just like, ‘Hey honey. It’s so good to see you. What’s up?’ It’s so Mira! She’s so cool, she looks intimidating, but she’s so soft, and she’s incredibly caring. But I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is Mira!’

“And then, the next day or a couple of days later, I saw Rei Ami,” EJAE continued. “Ian [Eisendrath, the film’s executive music producer] was just kind of watching her and Rei was just going off—I remember because Ian was vocal directing us, so he’s usually talking, but he wasn’t—he didn’t need to because that girl was directing herself, and every time she would get something wrong, she’s like, ‘Bitch, get it together! What are you doing? You sound like shit.’ Like, not even kidding. She screamed into the microphone, and then she came out and she was like, ‘EJAE and me? Oh my God!’ So cute. And she’s so small. I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, that’s Zoey!’ It was so insane how everything just happened.”
