Avengers Endgame: Encorereturns to theaters this weekend with real momentum behind it, and Disney seemingly hopes the re-release reignites interest before Avengers: Doomsday’s release in December. But the bigger question lingers: can this Marvel blockbuster finally overtake Avatarand claim the all-time worldwide box office crown?
Beating Avatar would be a big uphill battle for Avengers Endgame: Encore
Disney has brought the 2019 Marvel epic back to cinemas, and early tracking suggests the encore will land between $25 million and $28 million domestically over the weekend. That number would be remarkable for a re-release, though the film faces stiff competition. Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot targets $24 million to $26 million in its second weekend after a franchise-best $61 million debut. Three newcomers, The Heart of the Beast, Forgotten Island, and Primetime, will fight for third place, each projected between $15 million and $20 million.

Here’s where the numbers get sobering. Avengers: Endgame currently sits at $2,799.4 million worldwide, divided into $858.4 million domestically and $1,941.1 million internationally. Avatar, after all its past re-releases, stands at $2,923.7 million. The gap between them? Exactly $124.3 million (via Box Office Mojo).
That’s the mountain Endgame would have to climb. Domestic ticket sales alone won’t close it. Even a strong encore haul of $25 million to $28 million leaves the film roughly $96 million to $99 million short. So Avengers Endgame: Encore must lean heavily on international audiences to have any shot at dethroning Avatar. The re-release also serves as a warm-up for Avengers: Doomsday, which unites nearly all of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and releases in December. Meanwhile, Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day currently holds 2026’s biggest domestic debut at $360 million and the highest worldwide gross at $2,470 million. Whether the Avengers can challenge those records remains an open question.
For now, Avatar keeps its crown. Endgame’s encore opens big, but the No. 1 spot stays just out of reach, unless global audiences decide otherwise.
