Florida attorney general threatens charges after Cunningham is fouled in WNBA game

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier (R) threatened to charge WNBA players with assault after a hard foul against star Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham over the weekend.
Cunningham has been at the center of controversy in recent weeks over her comments pushing back on transgender athletes in women’s sports.
She was on the receiving end of a hard foul on Saturday from the Chicago Sky’s DiJonai Carrington, who was ejected from the game and later posted on social media suggesting race was a factor in the call.
“The WNBA knows better than to play games down here in Florida, because I’ll be charging people with assault,” Uthmeier wrote in his post responding to a video of the play.
“I should probably clarify … assault and battery,” he wrote in a subsequent post.

The WNBA said over the weekend it would review its eligibility policies in response to the recent debate about transgender athletes in women’s sports.
Uthmeier also weighed in on the discourse in a separate social media post, writing, “The WNBA continues to view the question of ‘what is a woman?’ as something that is ‘complex and nuanced’ instead of recognizing the simple truth. That’s the problem. What’s next, men assaulting women on the WNBA courts?”
The WNBA currently has no Florida-based teams and is facing increasing pressure from conservatives over its eligibility policies.
Former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom declared for the 2027 WNBA draft in a social media post where he seemingly mocked the debate, writing that “if simply declaring who you are is all that’s required, then I meet every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA.”
