Fran Drescher told PEOPLE at the New York City Ballet 2026 Spring Gala about her recent trip to Europe with her “gay ex-husband”
Drescher, 68, was married to Peter Marc Jacobson for two decades before their split in 1999. The TV writer later came out as gay.
While they were married, the pair co-created the show The Nanny, starring Drescher as a nanny to the children of a wealthy widower.
Fran Drescher loves to travel with Peter Marc Jacobson — but there’s just one concern!
“He's my gay ex-husband. He's my best friend and he's always around,” Drescher, 68, told PEOPLE at the New York City Ballet 2026 Spring Gala on May 7. “But we try and make sure that he's not too much of a c---block.”
Asked if she thinks having Jacobson, 68, around on vacation keeps other men from coming up to flirt with her, Drescher said, “That might have been, but for the most part, everybody knows who he is.”
The Nanny star was fresh off a trip to Berlin with Jacobson, to whom she was married for 21 years until they divorced in 1999. Two years later, Jacobson revealed to Drescher that he’s gay.
The former couple have continued to work together, including co-creating Happily Divorced, a show based on their real-life experience.

“He's my life partner. He's my work partner,” Drescher said of Jacobson, who also co-created The Nanny alongside her.

The Marty Supreme actress told her Instagram followers she was in Berlin “shooting,” adding, “more to come on that.” “My first time here,” she wrote of the German capital. “All my friends who have spent time in Berlin said we will love it and we do! Great restaurants, museums, shopping, city park and hotels.”
In her January PEOPLE cover story, Drescher said she was loving her single status. “Selfishly, I don’t want to compromise. That's a lot of what it is when you're with somebody … but the more you live on your own, the less you want to do that, and the less you need it if you happen to have a gay ex-husband.”
“I take him to everything, and I don't really care,” she continued. “I have a gay ex-husband — live with it! But I've been with him since I was 15. Who can compete with that? And over the years, he grew tremendously. He's not the same person. Neither one of us are who we were when we were married."
Following her split from Jacobson, the Happily Divorced actress married Dr. Shiva Ayyadurai in September 2014, though they split in 2016.

Drescher, of course, brought Jacobson to the New York City Ballet Gala as her date. The event served as the world premiere of principal dancer Tiler Peck’s second commission for the ballet company and featured a performance of George Balanchine’s ballet Diamonds.
