It's time to kiss the ring — the Green Lantern ring.
HBO's first *Lanterns* trailer arrives with a closer look at the next DC Studios title, showing off Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler as the drama series' chief heroes. The new drama will follow the release of *Creature Commandos*, *Superman*, *Peacemaker* season 2, and the upcoming *Supergirl* (in theaters June 26).
John Stewart (Pierre) is a Lantern-in-training under the tutelage of Hal Jordan (Chandler), a veteran of the Green Lantern Corps., an intergalactic policing force. A Lantern's chief weapon is the power ring. Fueled by willpower, a ring allows the user to fly and create virtually anything they can think of, from force fields to power blasts to structures to weapons and armor.
John is two months into his training with Hal, and he still hasn't worn a ring yet. "Don't get hung up on the jewelry, junior," Hal cautions his pupil.

The main plot of *Lanterns* involves this pair investigating a murder in the American Heartland, a mystery that will have larger ripple effects for the bigger DC universe. The footage shows Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, who becomes territorial when the "big shot" Lanterns roll into her town.
The trailer also highlights the tension between John and Hal, and the struggle of knowing when it's time to pass the torch. "You're old, you're tired," John tells Hal, who firmly declares, "This is my job. As long as I'm alive, that ain't gonna change."
One shot shows Hal finding his old Green Lantern super suit, while he makes a reference to other members of the Corps. "I'm the only human, they're aliens. One of them's a f---ing squirrel," he exclaims. The "squirrel" he's referring to is Ch'p, an extraterrestrial Green Lantern who resembles an anthropomorphic rodent. TBD on whether we'll actually meet him on the show.

However, we do know at least one other Lantern will be popping up — and a human one at that. ** previously confirmed Nathan Fillion will return as Guy Gardner after his *Superman* and *Peacemaker* season 2 appearances. Hal's quip about being the only human Lantern reflects how he thinks of Mr. Bowl Cut.
Also in the *Lanterns* cast is Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, a chief Green Lantern villain of DC Comics; Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, described as a modern cowboy; and Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, a potential love interest for John.
Chris Mundy of *True Detective: Night Country* serves as showrunner on *Lanterns*, and he writes the show alongside fellow executive producers Damon Lindelof of HBO’s *Watchmen* and prolific DC comic creator Tom King.
