- CBS sitcom *The Neighborhood* wrapped its eight-season run on Monday, May 11.
- The finale sees the Johnsons saying goodbye to the Butlers are they prepare to move back to Michigan.
- *Crutch*, a Tracy Morgan-starring spinoff, is now streaming on Paramount+.
After eight years (and eight seasons), *The Neighborhood* has aired its last episode.
The warm-hearted CBS sitcom, which debuted in 2018, began with the Johnson family moving from the Midwest to a predominantly Black neighborhood in California. Calvin Butler (Cedric the Entertainer) is initially puzzled by his new neighbors, but it isn't long before he and his family find common ground with Dave (Max Greenfield), Gemma (Beth Behrs), and their young son, Grover (Hank Greenspan).
Tensions are high heading into the finale, with Dave contemplating a move back to Michigan. He lost his job early in season 8, and a new opportunity has surfaced in the city of Kalamazoo.
So, do the Johnsons really say goodbye to the neighborhood they've called home for eight years? Here's how *The Neighborhood* ends after eight seasons.
Who’s getting married?

The finale begins with not one but *two* weddings. Calvin's sons, Malcolm (Sheaun McKinney) and Marty (Marcel Spears), are getting hitched in a dual ceremony. Marty is marrying his coworker-turned-lover Courtney (Skye Townsend), while Malcolm is putting a ring on the finger of Mercedes (Amber Stevens West), who stars on a *Housewives*-type reality show.
After the wedding, the boys gift Calvin a watch. "For the man who taught us to be men," reads an inscription. Malcolm also gives his dad a copy of *Brown Sugar Nights*, the romance novel he cowrote with Mercedes. In the acknowledgments, he thanks Calvin for never losing faith in him.
"It wasn't that long ago I felt like I was going nowhere, living back home," Malcolm says, referencing the years he struggled to find a purpose after his baseball career was derailed by an injury. "But you believed in me. Now I'm a novelist, about to get married, about to have a kid."
After Malcolm and Marty return to the reception, Tina (Tichina Arnold) expresses her anxiety about the future to her husband. "Everything is changing. We're about to start a whole new chapter in our lives," she says. "It's going to be okay when it's just the two of us, right?"
Calvin reassures her. "Babe, you're looking at this all wrong. We're not losing our kids — we're gaining more of each other," he says. "We can do whatever, because we are Calvin and Tina Butler."

Do the Johnsons move back to Michigan?

Yes, the Johnsons have decided to move back to Michigan. This doesn't sit too well with Calvin, who's been giving Dave the cold shoulder.
"Calvin, this is a day of love. We are in a room filled with love. Why can't you just admit how you feel?" Dave says before the wedding.
"Oh, I would admit how I feel, but we're in a church," cracks Calvin.
Grover, too, is upset, and he "claims asylum" in the Butlers' house to protest the move. Calvin uses Grover's frustrations to express his own to Dave. "You're tearing him away from his home. It's selfish. His own words," a "betrayed" Calvin says, masking his own grievances behind Grover's.
Old memories help ease the tension. The Johnsons recall how the Butlers helped them settle into the neighborhood, and Grover says Malcolm and Marty were like big brothers to him. The Johnsons have to leave, but they're leaving enriched by the eight years they spent living next door to the Butlers.
During a toast at the reception, Calvin congratulates his sons (and their brides) and says goodbye to the Johnsons.
"I'm going to have to keep it real, y'all. I wasn't feeling Dave at first," Calvin says. "But since I am keeping it real, I have to say that you turned out to be a great neighbor. And a good friend." After a bit of prodding, he admits that Dave is his "best friend."

Calvin and Tina stand in the Johnson's empty home as Dave and Gemma pack up the last of their things.
Dave gives Calvin a jar of SCOBY, his mother base for kombucha. "Mother is far too delicate to make the trip," he says. "But now you can make your own 'booch,' and a piece of me will always be in your gut."

When Gemma tries to return the Butlers their spare key, Calvin tells them to keep it. Tina says, "Our door is always open. This neighborhood will always be your home."
The Johnsons leave, and the Butlers notice that the house has already been sold. "The neighborhood will never be the same," Tina says. "You ready to meet the new neighbors?"
"I'm gonna need a minute," Calvin says. "I'm not ready to break in a new Dave."
Is there a* Neighborhood* spinoff?
There were originally meant to be two *Neighborhood* spinoffs, one about Calvin's cousin Crutch (Tracy Morgan) and another about Malcolm and Marty living in Venice Beach.
Crutch's spinoff, aptly titled *Crutch*, debuted on Paramount+ in November 2025, airing eight episodes. It's unclear at this point if there will be a second season.
Malcolm and Marty's spinoff, however, never came to fruition. Cedric the Entertainer addressed the project's cancellation in an interview with TVLine. "[Networks are] not doing a lot of pilots [anymore]," he told the outlet in April 2025. "They're not spending a lot of money... they're just kind of workshopping ideas. We thought we did a great job, but ultimately there wasn't enough room in the budget for what we had."
