House of the Dragon’s third season has officially concluded, and as the Game of Thrones prequel’s cast of characters only continues to expand, you’d be forgiven for struggling to remember how they’re related to one another—or how to spell their very similar names. (Rhaenyra, Rhaenys, and Rhaena? Please.)

The series based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood explores a chapter in Targaryen history in which two factions within the dragon-loving house, the Greens and Blacks, embark on an all-out war. Known to book readers as The Dance of the Dragons, the bloody battle concerns who has the rightful claim to the Iron Throne after King Viserys’s death. Is it his firstborn daughter, Rhaenyra, or is it his son with Alicent Hightower, Aegon II? Naturally, gender is at the heart of the issue.
