*Love Is Blind* season 10 had one of the show's most explosive splits during its finale thanks to cast members Ashley Carpenter and Alex Henderson. The former couple is now opening up about the moments before the altar that led to the shocking breakup.

"So what people don't know is that I had a conversation with Ashley off-camera the day before the wedding," Alex told Netflix's Tudum about the offscreen moment that preceded to their memorable split. "I was [like], 'Hey, we didn't get there, but I thank you for being my partner through this.' I really didn't want her to get blindsided. It was a quick conversation — met with an 'Okay, I respect that' from her — and that was that. I was going into the ceremony thinking we were going to politely just be like, 'Hey, it wasn't it.'"

That certainly explains why Alex didn't seem very surprised by Ashley's declaration at the altar that she wasn't interested in saying "I do," but the athlete noted that he wasn't as comfortable with her remarks on his character. "When she came at my integrity, that was unexpected," Alex added. "I was very proud of myself for not responding negatively because it was a highly emotional moment. I absorbed the hit and let it go."

Most fans of the show were already side-eyeing the possible union between Alex and Ashley, having long seen the concerning signs that Alex was hiding some red flags beneath his charming smile. From the conversation with Brittany that bordered on inappropriate — saying he would normally go for women who looked like her in the real world rather than his fiancée — to his wishy-washy stories about his career and "nomadic lifestyle," it was pretty clear that things weren't as conflict-free as they had been when the couple was getting to know one another in the pods. But it was hard for viewers to determine if Ashley was too smitten to see the forest for the trees. Then came the walk down the aisle.

Ashley completely flips the script when the couple gets to the altar, ending things before the former soccer player has the chance to declare his stance.

"I know your answer and it doesn't matter to me. I know you don't choose me and I'm not choosing you either," she tells him with an audience of their friends and family. "After we left the pods, there was no effort, no intimacy, no questions ... We moved into the apartments and we were roommates."

Things get dicey when Ashley then accuses Alex of being a liar. "You would say a lot of words, but somehow I found myself more confused after our conversations," she says. "Lying is nonnegotiable for me." While Alex briefly attempts to argue that he does have the "integrity" that she is insisting he lacks, he ultimately lets her get the last word — much to the dismay of his mother. "Saying no to you today is a win," Ashley concludes.

Although Alex's mind was made up, Ashley says she was determined to reach the final phase of the journey, regardless of how Alex might feel.

"He is a good-looking person, I can give him that," Ashley told Tudum. "Looks aside, I need so much more from a partner, so I chose myself. I deserve something so much more extraordinary, and that wasn't it. That was subpar at best."

She credited her outspoken father, who's a divorce lawyer, for giving her the confidence to take a stand at the altar, letting Alex know exactly what was on her mind before saying no. "I needed to see this all the way through, not only [for] the experiment, but for myself," she shared. "My dad always says the best thing he ever taught his kids is how to make a decision. I'm a fighter, so if I have an argument with the person that I love, I'm going to fight through that — I'm not just going to run and hide and ghost him. I'm going to give him the opportunity to show me that he can be the man I deserve."

While Ashley and Alex were one of several couples who called it quits during the show's final episode, the season did end with two couples actually getting married. That's an improvement from season 9, which saw zero couples take that final step. However, the upcoming reunion should reveal if any of the couples have called it quits or rekindled their relationship off screen.

The *Love Is Blind* season 10 reunion drops March 11 on Netflix.
