Love Island UK contestant Gabriel Garland will not return

A spokesperson for the show confirms his exit to PEOPLE

His exit was due to a connection to a 2019 stabbing incident, in which he was not convicted, The Sun and The Guardian report

A Love Island UK contestant has exited the show.

Gabriel Garland, one of season 13's Casa Amor boys, "has now left the Villa and will not be returning," a spokesperson for ITV confirmed to PEOPLE in a statement on Monday, June 29.

The 24-year-old reality star was reportedly removed from Love Island UK following production becoming aware of him being named in court documents linked to a 2019 stabbing, according to The Sun and The Guardian.

According to The Sun, Garland's name is referenced in documents connected to a New Year’s Eve 2019 stabbing in south-east London, in which Vitor Mazzer was found guilty of two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent. Garland had an altercation with the stabbing victims, according to both outlets, and he was not convicted of any offense.

ITV did not comment on the reason for his departure from the show and PEOPLE has reached out to Garland, who was one of six Casa Amor men to enter the villa.

He appeared on the Sunday, June 28 episode in the U.K., which was filmed before his departure, per Deadline.

Garland's exit is not the first from the Love Island world this year. Love Island UK bombshell George Knight previously exited the Mallorca villa earlier this month, with a spokesperson for the series telling PEOPLE it was for "private reasons."

Over in the U.S., ahead of the premiere of the current eighth season of Love Island USA, Vasana Montgomery was removed from the cast after videos resurfaced that appeared to show her using the N-word. PEOPLE confirmed her exit on May 30, and the contestant apologized in a later Instagram statement.

Separately, Love Island USA's Alannah Keyser was confirmed to no longer appear on the show as of Thursday, June 25, as Peacock told PEOPLE at the time. She shared her own apology video, after footage resurfaced of her singing along to a song containing a racial slur, on Saturday, June 27. "This has definitely been a learning lesson for me, and it sucks that I didn’t get a chance to really show my personality and who I am," she said in a TikTok clip, before vowing to "spread positivity" in an additional message at the end of her video.

Love Island UK is streaming on Hulu in the U.S.
