Prince Edward’s former girlfriend and musical theater veteran Ruthie Henshall has released a tell-all memoir where she revealed some intimate details about her past relationship with him. The book mentions anecdotes of the time when he wished that he had “two wives” to how conflicting schedules and the contrasting worlds they both came from ultimately led to the demise of their brief romance.
Edward had a whirlwind romance with the West End and Broadway star from 1988 to 1993 shortly before he met his now-wife of 27 years, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh.
When Prince Edward Wished He Could Have “Two Wives”
In her recently released memoir, The Showgirl and the Prince, Ruthie recalls some of the significant events of their relationship including the time when Prince Edward wished that he could have “two wives.”
The author mentioned in her book that her former beau once told her that in a perfect world, he would have two wives. She explained his reasoning to be, “one for the job, and one for the woman you loved because you wouldn’t want the woman you love to go through the job.”
Even though she recalled their romance to be sweet and honest back then, they both knew that it was “never going to work” because of their contrasting worlds and her professional
ambitions where she wanted to make it big in the field of theater, dance and music.
Ruthie Henshall And Prince Edward’s Romance Was Short Lived
Speaking on an episode of Hello! Magazine’s A Right Royal podcast, the Cats star said, “He had said to me, ‘Ruth, can you imagine what would have to happen if you wanted to do eight shows a week?’ The cost of that alone, of having to have sniffer dogs at the theater every night and to have protection. That in itself would have been hard and expensive.”

Even though her romance with Prince Edward was short-lived, Ruthie Henshall made it big in the Broadway and West End musical theater sphere with productions like Peggy Sue Got Married, Crazy For You, Chicago and Marguerite.
She ultimately refused to give up her theater career over her romance with Edward which would have required her to ultimately give up her professional ambitions if she had married him and become a member of the Royal Family.
Apart from this, Ruthie also joked and remembered the time when she struggled to fit into the Royal clan particularly when her interaction with the late Queen Elizabeth II went horribly wrong.
During her stint on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here in 2020, the Doctors star said, “There’s people sitting round a table, and I’m thinking, ‘That looks like the Queen.’ And I remembered my dad had said to me that if you ever meet the Queen, he said you curtsy and call her ma’am. I grab her hand. I forget all about the curtsy, and I’m like, ‘Really, really pleased to meet you’, really pleased to meet you.”
Even though their love story did not meet a happy ending, Ruthie Henshall mentioned in her memoir that she “genuinely fell in love” with the late Queen’s youngest son, whom she referred to as “prince of a man.”
