Ryan Murphy Says He Just Finished a Script for Potential “Glee” Revival

The series co-creator said he has spoken with about 10 original cast members, who are enthusiastic about the idea
Murphy said the cast has not yet read the script, and he wants to see what they think before moving forward
Ryan Murphy may be ready to return to the halls of McKinley High.
The co-creator of Glee, 60, revealed that he has just finished writing a script for a potential new incarnation of the hit musical series, which aired on Fox from 2009 to 2015.
“Well, funny you ask, because I just finished the script an hour ago,” Murphy told Entertainment Tonight. “We have a script. Brad [Falchuk], Ian [Brennan] and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something.”
Murphy said he has also been in contact with several original cast members, who he said have responded enthusiastically to the possibility of revisiting the series.

“I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members, and it’s very sweet,” he said. “They’ve all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.”
The cast members have not seen the script yet.
“Nobody’s read it, so I don’t know; we’ll see,” Murphy said. “I mean, I vowed to myself that I wanted to write a couple of them to see what people think, particularly the cast, cause we were very close when we were making it.”
Murphy previously hinted that he was considering returning to Glee during an interview with PEOPLE in July. Speaking about the series and the younger viewers who have discovered it since its original run, Murphy said at the time, “That show is interesting because it’s come back around. So many young people now watch it. And I’m like, ‘Maybe we should revisit that show.’ ”
He credited his own nostalgia as a potential reason fans might a rebirth of the series.

“My nostalgia and love for that show is enough that I’m like, ‘Well, maybe people would like to see a new incarnation of that in some capacity,’ ” he told PEOPLE.
The original series premiered in 2009, ran for six seasons and ended in 2015. It earned six Emmys and 40 nominations in the Primetime and Creative Arts categories during its run.
The musical comedy centered on the New Directions glee club, led by Matthew Morrison’s Will Schuester, and featured an ensemble cast that included Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Chris Colfer, Dianna Agron, Naya Rivera, Heather Morris, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Darren Criss, Harry Shum Jr. and Mark Salling. Later seasons introduced additional cast members, including Chord Overstreet, Melissa Benoist, Alex Newell and Becca Tobin.

Jane Lynch’s Sue Sylvester served as a frequent adversary to the glee club and became one of the show’s breakout characters.
The series also featured guest appearances from Gwyneth Paltrow, Carol Burnett, Idina Menzel, Kristen Chenoweth, Olivia Newton-John, John Stamos, Britney Spears, Whoopi Goldberg, Kate Hudson, Jeff Goldblum, Sarah Jessica Parker and many others.
Murphy’s latest comments come as he balances work on Glee with his other television projects, including American Horror Story.
Asked by Entertainment Tonight about working on both shows, Murphy joked, “That’s my schizophrenic life.”
Glee is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
