Authorities in Arizona now believe that Savannah Guthrie's elderly missing mother, Nancy, was taken from her home while she slept.

"I believe she was abducted, yes," Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told CBS News on Monday. "She didn't walk from there. She didn't go willingly."**

A church friend of Nancy's alerted the *Today* show co-anchor and her siblings, Cameron and Annie, that their mother, who is 84, did not attend service Sunday.********

After they did an unsuccessful search around her Tucson residence, near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue, where they had left her and she was last seen about 9:45 p.m. Saturday, they called 911.

A public information officer for the sheriff's department told ** on Monday, "Sheriff Nanos has stated that he believes a crime has been committed. At this point, investigators believe she was taken from the home against her will, possibly in the middle of the night. Taken against her will includes possible kidnapping or abduction."

Earlier, Nanos told reporters at a press conference, "We saw some things at the home that were concerning to us. We believe now, after we process that crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime scene. And we're asking for the community's help."**

He didn't elaborate on what had made them suspicious.

Nanos noted, though, that officials were concerned that Nancy did not have medication that she takes daily with her, a situation that he said "could be fatal."

However, he confirmed that Nancy's disappearance was "not dementia-related," as she's mentally "as sharp as a tack."**

But Nancy does have issues with her ability to move and "couldn't walk 50 yards by herself."**

Authorities have asked for anyone with information on the elder Guthrie's whereabouts to call 911.

In the wake of the disappearance, Savannah Guthrie was not on Monday's episode of *Today*. Instead, her colleagues read a statement from her. "I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support," she said. "Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff's Department at (520) 351-4900."**
