Warner Bros. lost nearly half its quarterly revenue, and Supergirl’s box office failure is largely to blame. The studio’s second quarter earnings report paints a grim picture of how its theatrical releases dragged down overall performance.

Warner Bros. suffers 46% quarterly drop in revenue after Supergirl’s failure

Warner Bros. Discovery reported a 46% decline in theatrical revenue during its second quarter of 2026, The Hollywood Reporter reported. The studio’s releases Supergirl and The Bride both bombed at the box office during the period. These poor results came against tough comparisons to Q2 2025 hits A Minecraft Movie and Sinners.

The company’s overall financial performance also fell short of analyst expectations. As a result, WBD reported total quarterly revenues of $8.717 billion against Wall Street’s forecast of $9.21 billion. Additionally, the company posted a net income of $100 million for the quarter.

Furthermore, advertising revenue also dropped significantly, falling 22% during the period. Turner’s networks continue to feel the impact of losing NBA broadcasting rights. However, the company’s streaming segment offered a bright spot with revenue rising 9% to $3.1 billion.

TV and streaming programming highlights during the June quarter included Euphoria, House of the Dragon, The Pitt, and the final season of Hacks. Meanwhile, David Ellison’s $111 billion Paramount Skydance takeover bid for WBD continues to face opposition. Notably, a coalition of twelve states is attempting to block the deal, and the case will go to trial in March 2027.

Beginning October 1, 2026, Paramount Skydance must pay a ticking fee of $7 million per day to WBD shareholders. The fee only applies if the deal ultimately closes. Ellison addressed concerns about his potential oversight of CNN’s editorial content in a recent New York Times op-ed. He wrote, “I do not aspire to lead these companies to bend their newsrooms to my views.” He added, “I believe that news should be based on facts and truth.” WBD provided no updates on the pending deal within its earnings report.
