Minor spoilers ahead for The Madison.

Taylor Sheridan’s new series, The Madison, is his first show that focuses predominately on women—specifically, the women in just one family, the Clyburns. Stacy (Michelle Pfieffer), her two daughters, and two granddaughters (plus one son-in-law) are grieving a surprising, devastating loss.

“All [Taylor Sheridan’s] shows are from the male gaze,” Kurt Russell tells T&C. “No matter what they’re about, they’re in that vein. This one’s not. This is his approach to the female gaze. We see everything from that point of view. I found that really interesting to be a part of.” While their lineage is nowhere near as complicated as the Dutton family tree, it may be hard to keep track of the Clyburns as you watch the series (three episodes are now streaming on Paramount+, and three more drop next weekend).

Stacy Clyburn

Stacy, the fierce matriarch of the series, is a self-described “city mouse” grieving the unexpected loss of her husband in a plane crash. At one point, Stacy says she is 65, and at another, viewers learn she’s been with Preston since she was 19—meaning they’ve been together for 46 years. During that entire time, she never visits Montana, and the couple only go camping once. The entire plot of season one revolves around Stacy and her family staying at Preston’s cabin in Montana, on the Madison river, where she learns more about him as she grieves.

Preston Clyburn

Preston, the patriarch of the Clyburn family, lives and works in New York City but his heart is in Montana. He frequently travels to visit his brother, Paul, so they can fly fish together—it is on one of those visits, when they’re flying from an outing in “virgin” river, when their plane crashes and they both die. As the show largely focuses on Stacy and the Clyburn family coping with Preston’s death, viewers only get glimpses of him in flashbacks and through the journal he left for Stacy.

Abigail Reese (née Clyburn)

Stacy and Preston’s eldest daughter, Abigail, is a key character in the show. (She also goes by Abby.) She is divorced, and doesn’t appear to have a job. Abby has two daughters with her ex-husband, Dallas Reese (played by Tanc Sands, he appears in the finale): There’s Bridgette (who is 15 years old), who loves to horseback ride, and Macy (11 years old).

At one point, Abby shares she is 37 years old, and had her older daughter when she was young. (At another point in the series, she said she had her daughter when she was 20, making Bridgette 17, but then another line of dialogue says Bridgette is 15.)

Paige McIntosh (née Clyburn)

Paige is 26 years old and works as a publicist a fashion company. She has been married for two years, to Russell (see below), and they live in a stylish and large apartment in Soho.

Russell McIntosh

Russell, Paige’s husband, works in private equity, and is focused on what he calls “experiential hospitality.” We don’t learn too much about Russell outside his relationship with Paige and her family, but viewers do learn his father, who loved to tell raunchy jokes, is dead.

Paul Clyburn

There are not many details about Paul in the series, as The Madison largely focuses on the loss of Preston. At the time of his death, Paul lived in Montana and used to be married to a woman named Melissa. He was still grieving her, and was devoted to a life alone, fishing, with occasional visits from his older brother.
