Tom Cruise reportedly stepped outside royal protocol not once, but twice, with Kate Middleton at the world premiere of his new film, “Digger.” Prince William looked on as the moment unfolded in Leicester Square. The evening marked a reunion for the trio, who had last shared a red carpet back in 2022.

As Kate Middleton approached a set of steps in her floor-sweeping gown, Tom Cruise held out his hand to help her down, per The Mirror. She took it while William walked close by, reportedly shifting her clutch to her free hand before accepting his offer. The Hollywood star then broke protocol a second time moments later, greeting Kate with a kiss on each cheek.
Kate accepted the actor’s gestures in good grace. He stayed to chat, and the three were soon laughing together long enough to hold up the schedule. William didn’t appear bothered by any of it. A body language expert reportedly said he looked “bashful but happy,” stepping back as he let Cruise lead the greeting.
The Hollywood icon also had a compliment ready for William’s fashion choices. He told the prince, “Great jacket,” in reference to his double-breasted velvet tuxedo jacket and bow tie against the night’s black carpet.

Photographers captured the exchange and quickly made the rounds online. Cruise offered Kate the same helping hand at the 2022 Top Gun: Maverick premiere, the last time the trio crossed paths.
Royal protocol states that greetings should be a bow of the head for men, a slight curtsy for women, or simply a handshake. As a rule, members of the royal family aren’t meant to be touched unless they invite it first. Very few public figures are given that kind of leeway with the royal family, which is part of what made Cruise’s gestures stand out.
Fans online were quick to point to Kate’s ease with Cruise as a sign of her famously good-natured personality. The two gestures added an unexpectedly personal touch to a formal red carpet moment ahead of Digger’s October 2 release.
