- *Sullivan's Crossing* season 4 is finally arriving on Netflix.

- Harry Sullivan (Scott Patterson) was written off the series at the end of season 3.

- While the showrunner left the door open for his return, Patterson's exit might be permanent.

As *Sullivan's Crossing* season 4 arrives on Netflix, the absence of the series' eponymous character may leave some viewers with questions.

Scott Patterson, who played Harry "Sully" Sullivan in the first three seasons of The CW's beloved cozy drama, has left Timberlake behind. Based on Robyn Carr's novels, *Sullivan's Crossing* follows Maggie (Morgan Kohan), a neurosurgeon who relocates from Boston to Nova Scotia, where her estranged father (Patterson) runs the titular campground. Maggie and Sully reconnected over the course of those three seasons, but it seems her dad's exit at the end of season 3 may be more permanent than we thought.

Ahead of season 4's debut, showrunner and executive producer Roma Roth confirmed to ** that Patterson wouldn't be returning to the series for narrative reasons. Meanwhile, Patterson has his own take on why he exited. Here's everything we know about why Patterson isn't in *Sullivan's Crossing* season 4, and what the future holds for Sully.

What happened with Sully at the end of season 3?

After surviving the fire at Rob's diner at the end of season 2, Sully had a much nicer story arc in season 3. Bestselling romance novelist Helen (Kate Vernon) arrives at the campground, where she's been accidentally double-booked with another guest. In a classic enemies-to-lovers plot, Sully and Helen go from despising one another to falling head over heels.

At the end of season 3, Helen reveals that she's traveling to Ireland to meet with producers about potentially adapting one of her novels into a TV series, and Sully decides to tag along. Maggie, who is already dealing with uncertainty about her future, is thrown for a loop, but Sully assures her that he loves Sullivan's Crossing and that he will return at some point.

"Season 3 of *Sullivan's Crossing* ended with Sully leaving for Ireland, beginning a new chapter in his life. Season 4 picks up the next day, with Sully still overseas," Roth explained in a statement provided by The CW. "While he isn’t physically present in this season, the character remains an important part of the world with the potential to be included in future seasons should that align with the ongoing creative."

But as of season 4, Sully is still on indefinite sabbatical, while Maggie and her love interest, Cal (Chad Michael Murray), are running the Crossing. According to Roth, the door is open for Sully to return, but Patterson sees things a little differently.

Why did Scott Patterson leave Sullivan’s Crossing?

After Roth confirmed Patterson's exit, the actor took to social media in March to share his perspective. Noting that he "fell in love with Sully" and has "nothing but fondness" for the character, Patterson wrote that "The creative differences were becoming untenable and I just sadly realized that the show was not something that I could agree to continue."

As for Roth's claim that writing Sully out was a narrative choice, Patterson said, "It's unfortunate that it is now being implied that they moved on from me/Sully when the fact is the complete opposite, and those who sadly already have spoken out are also fully aware of this fact, and yet chose to say otherwise."

"I was not intending to make any statement," Patterson continued, "but the fans of the books and the show deserve to know the truth as I have always been respectful of those who support this industry by watching and loving these characters we are so dang lucky and blessed to portray and bring to life."

The actor concluded, "The fans deserved better than to think the embodiment of this character, me, would just disrespect not only the show, but them." Based on Patterson's statement, it doesn't sound like Sully is returning to *Sullivan's Crossing* anytime soon.

Kohan and Murray have been fairly diplomatic about Patterson's exit, choosing to focus on how it affects their characters and the story.

Ahead of season 4, Murray, who previously worked with Patterson on *Gilmore Girls*, addressed the actor's exit in an interview with *Yahoo Canada*. "It's one of those situations where you go, 'OK, well, just look at the show. What is the show? Where does it sit? And how do you hold it up and keep it true to itself?' And that's all on the text and the storytelling. There's no question in my mind that we did that. The show stays totally true to itself."

"He still exists in this world, and there's still that relationship," Murray said of Sully. "And he built the Crossing, so it's always going to be there, and that's kind of the foundation that the show is built on."

"I think it's a big thing for [Maggie]," Kohan told PEOPLE in May. "She didn't have him for so long. So really it was a newer kind of version of that relationship for her. So I think she definitely misses that, and it's that feeling of when something happens, the first person you want to text or you want to call, and then you realize you can't or they're busy or whatever. So I definitely think there's some of that for her, but she also has dealt with life on her own for a long time before all this."

"I think as much as she wishes he was there and to have that support, I do think she knows that she can trust herself or that she will be able to pick herself up wherever she lands kind of thing," she continued.

It's unclear if or when Patterson will ever return to *Sullivan's Crossing*, but in the meantime, fans can catch up with the actor by tuning in to his *Gilmore Girls* rewatch podcast, *I Am All In*.
